Fire Alarm Design Challenges in Complex Buildings
The replacement of a fire alarm system in any building can cause major disruption and put
occupants at risk while the project is under way.

This presentation will outline the issues encountered when designing a fire alarm system for
installation in an existing, fully occupied building. The presentation will discuss innovations
developed to solve complex building retrofit and operations issues by employing available
technologies and an objective / performance based approach to the design.

Fred Leber will describe the role of relevant Codes and standards, the importance of identifying
the needs of building owners and operators, as well as the technical issues that arise when
retrofitting a complex structure with high occupant load, multiple building interconnections, and
restrictive working conditions.

Complex state-of-the art technology is used to simplify the process of changeover while
implementing user-friendly operator interfaces."

Speaker: Fred Leber, is the CEO of a professional engineering (Leber/Rubes Inc)
firm that specializes in fire protection engineering and building code consulting. He is a
graduate of Ryerson University (Electronics and Physics). Fred is also a co editor of the popular
book “Operation of Fire Protection Systems published by NFPA.
